Two of you exist. Only one will survive.

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.

Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.

Elsie Chapman’s suspenseful YA debut weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.

The hunter becomes the hunted. . . .

West Grayer is done killing. She defeated her Alternate, a twin raised by another family, and proved she’s worthy of a future. She’s ready to move on with her life.

The Board has other plans. They want her to kill one last time, and offer her a deal worth killing for. But when West recognizes her target as a ghost from her past, she realizes she’s in over her head. The Board is lying, and West will have to uncover the truth of the past to secure her future.

How far will the Board go to keep their secrets safe? And how far will West go to save those she loves? With nonstop action and surprising twists, Elsie Chapman’s intoxicating sequel to Dualed reveals everything.

Loved the first book. I’ve been reading dystopian YA almost constantly for the past 3 years and your book was the most original and well-written that I’ve read in ages. Not sure if I can wait til next May for book two!

  13. Eunice Koomson says:

  14. Angel says:

Elsie, best book ever! I wouldn’t be very surprised at all if it becomes a movie and rivals The Hunger Games–with Elizabeth Gillies as West? Omg, that would be so cool! Anyway, can’t wait for Divided. At least it’s in less than a year, right? 🙂 Anyways, you have to continue writing after this. You HAVE to. My inner self would be just crushed if you don’t! Thank you for being such a great writer!

  15. gaby says:

  17. Alora says:

Hey, just wanted to put my two-cents into the pool of praise for your work:

I’m completely in love with everything about Dualed! From the concept (awesomely offbeat), to your writing style and voice (eye-gasm and mental imagery to the extreme), to the characters and their development (painful and happy feelings mushed together with love and held together by sheer willpower), and everything else I can’t quite name that makes it amazing.

I honestly cannot give enough praise for this book. Interesting, in-depth, detailed without being cumbersome. In short: it’s perfection. Super excited for Divided (already marked on the calendar), I honestly wish I had it right now.

Anyway, keep up the great work because you are quickly creeping up my list of favourite authors. Thank you so much for writing this stunning book.

  18. Chidimma says:

Amazing book! Can’t wait till the second one :)!!!

  19. Chidimma says:

P.S. I totally agree with Angel. Elizabeth Gillies would make an awesome West. Fantasy movie worth seeing.

  20. David says:

Is Dualed going to be a trilogy?

What would be the title of your book 3 or the plot?

  21. I tend not to leave a ton of comments, however i did some searching
and wound up here Books | Elsie Chapman. And I do have 2 questions
for you if you don’t mind. Could it be only me or does it look like some
of these comments look like they are left by brain dead visitors?

😛 And, if you are writing at other places, I would like to follow everything new you have to post.
Would you make a list of every one of your social pages like your linkedin profile, Facebook
    page or twitter feed?

    • Hi there! I don’t think any of these comments fall under the category of “brain-dead,” but ymmv? For links, if you go to the home page, on the bottom left, I’ve listed all the places I can be found online in an author capacity. I only blog actively on tumblr now, but I’m also on FB, twitter, pinterest, etc. Thanks for coming by!

  27. kiley says:

i read dualed and i could not put it down or stop rereading it.

  28. Tiernan Baucom says:

just finished Divided, wow so wasn’t expecting those plot twists, are you going to write a third book?

  29. Cy says:

hi ! I just finished dualed, do you know when Divided will be released in France ?
Sorry if my english is not good, I’m a french teenager
PS : my best friend and I were in love with your book !! 🙂

  30. McKalyn says:

Okay. So. Omg. I loved Dualed and Divided! They were really really good.. And different at the same time. But girl you better get to writing the third book because I don’t know how you can just end a book like that! I seriously might die if you don’t make another one! 😃 I read Divided in a day.. And I don’t read very fast! I mean the book had so many different twists and then it all just comes together and you’re just like woah. Like I seriously couldn’t stop smiling when I was reading nor could I stop reading it! Ugh. It’s just to good. But you can’t just leave it hanging like that.. With a choice I need to know the choice!!

    • Hello! Oh, wow, thank you so much! Really very happy to hear you enjoyed both books! There are currently no plans for a third, though. I know it was bit of a risk to end it the way I did, but choice can be good, too 🙂

  31. Milly Jones says:

Hello! I loved your book Dualed and Divided. I read them both in 2 days. I’m already not the most social person but having these books in my hand stopped me from talking for the full 48 hours. I am defiantly a book worm. It would be amazing if you were to write a third. Although I’m sure you wouldn’t need the help, I have some ideas about how you could write the third, maybe even a 4th book. The ending of the book is very abrupt. I love suspense. But I don’t know how I could possibly go on without knowing what happened to both West and Chord. I would also die if the books were made into movies. They are just about my favorite books!! I also thought it would be a grand idea to write books about West’s family before they all… passed. I for one would love to here the stories of how Luke and Chord became friends and Ave seeing his first complete and so much more. I hope you take some of my thoughts into consideration. Once again, I love love love those books.

    • Hello Milly! Thank you so much for your awesome message! I’m very happy to hear you enjoyed both Dualed and Divided so much. Well, currently there are no plans for a third book, or novellas or such, as that is up to my publishers. But thank you for all the interest and excitement!

  32. Larry says:

You HAVE to write the next book! How else will we know what is really in the surround?!? The ending of Divided is perfect to build on.

Throughly enjoyed both Dualed and Divided. Thanks.

  33. Alyvia says:

Thanks for writing Dualed and Divided very well written and very exiting. Do you think you might write a third book? It would be very cool to see what you come up with.

    • Hello Alyvia! Thank you so much! There are no current plans for a third book, but I’m very happy you enjoyed both Dualed and Divided. And I’m always working on new ideas, so hopefully there will be other books in the future, even if they won’t be in the Dualed world.

  34. Sandra Frank says:

Loved these books! I really hope you continue with the story. I have too many questions for it to be over.

  35. Madeline Payne says:

I love your books! I’m so invested in the characters and the world you created. I finished both books in three days. Please keep writing!

  36. Kendyl says:

I just bought your book today and love it. I can’t stop reading it, and I already told a ton of my friends about it, who now all want to borrow it from me. Can’t wait to read Divided!

  37. […] I read a lot of amazing YA novels that didn’t, like The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson, Dueled by Elsie Chapman, and The Well’s End by Seth Fishman. I highly recommend you pick those three up […]

  38. shellbell256 says:

I loved the books!! Are there going to be anymore books??

  39. twangyvoice says:

So I’ve read Dualed and Divided just finished Divided in fact and the way you ended the book begs for another to be written.

Is there to be a third book?

The way trilogy’s are today I assume there’s a good chance. Let’s hope so. Really liked the books.

  40. Shannon Fish says:

I just concluded “Divided.” I have been an avid reader for 29 of my 33 years. That said, this series has plot twists even I did not see coming! A rare gem, and I am thrilled at the prospect of more titles from a great contemporary author. Thank you for the gift of a good read! (As an aside, I admire that you are not writing a third book, sometimes stories are best left running in a reader’s head; although, a series about the next generation is an enticing prospect.)

  41. Marie GOSSELIN says:

I’ve just begun to read Dualed and even if it’s just the start of the book, I’m in like I’ve never been.
I’m in a hurry to finish this one and Divided too.
Is there a sequel at those 2 books ?
Thank you by advance for your answer.

  42. Charlotte says:

I love Dualed and Divided 😉

  43. Nicolas Ngrt says:

Hi, I’m French and I’m reading Divided, I really loved Dualed where you find all this inspiration? This is really crazy! Goodbye and good luck 🙂

    • Hi Nicolas! Thank you so much, I’m really happy you’ve enjoyed and are enjoying! Hmm, inspiration…it doesn’t come from any one thing in particular. Most of it comes from just reading other books, watching movies, listening to people talk. Ideas spring from other ideas, is probably the best way to put it 🙂

  44. casidy woods says:

every book you write is amazing especially Dualed and divided. West are an inspiration to us all.

  45. noah s says:

Hi I have a really important question about book writing. So, I have been writing this book for 2 years now and I am just about finished. My friend ended up reading it and she said it was just like yours. I wanted to know what you think and if it is to alike. I don’t want to post my ideas on here so if you wanted to here, I would love it if you emailed me. Thank you, and hope to hear back!

  46. Carla Valesi says:

Elsie ,i find dualed and divided incredibly well written ,but is he going to be a sequel ?
Thank you for making my dream thanks to your book .
    I am french .
    I love your books ! 😛

  47. Laurie-Ann Proulx says:

I have read both Dualed and Divided and I adored them so much. If you write anything else, I would love to read it as I am a great fan. As I was reading both books of this awesome duology, I could not believe all the twists and surprises that kept happening page after page and I couldn’t put it down. I’d get in trouble in class for reading instead of working. That said, keep up the amazing work! Since you are not writing a third book to this series, (and I love your novels) I wanted to ask you who is your favourite author because I might enjoy reading their books as well.

    • Hello Laurie-Ann! Thank you so very much! I’m so happy you liked them! Hmm, well, I grew up reading old Stephen King, and I still love rereading them. One of my very favourite books is Watership Down by Richard Adams. Some of my very favourite series are the Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness and His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. I also love the first three of the Monstrumologist series by RIck Yancey (there is a fourth that I haven’t read yet). My tastes are all over the place, but if ever want to take a peek at my Instagram, I usually post what I’m reading there 🙂 Thank you again for taking the time to read Dualed and Divided–hopefully you’ll also check out of some of the above books!

  48. Laurie-Ann Proulx says:

I also really think that there needs to be a movie!

  49. Maggie Steuer says:

I love these books! I was wondering if you were planning to write a third one…

  50. kitkatsftw says:

I just wanted to say I love your books and I knew I would the second I saw them in the library! A week later I own both of them in hardcover and I can’t stop hoping for another book in the series, or better yet a prequel. Thank you so much for really reaching out to me and inspiring me to even write fiction of my own! -Kit

  51. […] Chapman is the author of Dualed and Divided. She’s also a contributor to Friday the Thirteeners and The Lucky 13s. She currently lives […]

  52. Michelle Bowen says:

Loved both books! Is there a third coming?

  53. Skylar Dews says:

I read Dualed about a year ago and absolutely loved it! I just finished reading Divided and loved the story (these are by far my favorite books ever), but am really confused on the way it ended. Will you ever write anything else pertaining to what happens to the characters in the future? or will it be left for the readers to decide?

    • Hi Skylar! Thank you so much, that makes me really happy to hear! No, Dualed and Divided end as a duology. I DID leave the ending to book 2 a bit open-ended, as I liked the idea of letting readers decide what happened to West and Chord regarding Kersh and the Surround 🙂

      • Skylar Dews says:

Is there any way that you could give me any insight as to how you pictured West and Chord’s life after Divided ends?

    • Replying to your previous comment, Skylar, as I can’t seem to leave one with your latest! I always imagined West and Chord leaving for the Surround–whether or not they decide to try to break Kersh’s system first, I never decided 🙂

  54. Venise says:

I read Dualed and Divided, and seriously I can’t stop thinking about West and everything!! Your books are AMAZING!!!
Looking forward to read the 3rd tome!! I mean I hope that you are writting a sequel, because the story can’t end like that!!!! =)

  55. Yanaiz Roberts says:

I would love to know if your thinking about a movie??

  56. My name says:

I just finished reading dualed and I really enjoyed the book! They don’t hv the second book in the libraries so I guess I’m gonna hv to buy it😝I can’t wait till then. I was hoping this would be a trilogy but after seeing some of the comments I see there might not be one.But that’s ok👍

  57. Alex Rutten says:

Is there going to be a sequel to Divided, I wanted to know because the series seemed unfinished.
